Lending a Hand to Families Affected by the December Floods
When severe rains hit upcountry Sri Lanka in December 2025, many families suddenly found themselves facing floods, landslides, and a great deal of uncertainty. Although our main work at Lotus Caring Hands is centred around education, there are times when people simply need immediate support — and this was one of those moments.
With help from our local contacts, we reached two estate communities in Atabage and Pussellawa near Gampola. Getting there wasn’t easy; access was difficult and transport had to be arranged quickly. But we knew families were struggling, and we were determined to reach them without delay.
We were able to support around 50 families in these estates, providing essentials during a very difficult time. At the same time, we also helped provide meals for around 200 children in the Matale area who had been displaced by the floods.
A short video of this work was first shown at Anthimalai 2026, our annual musical event at the Beck Theatre in Hayes, where more than 500 people gathered in support of Lotus Caring Hands. The video offers just a small glimpse of what took place during those challenging days, and a reminder that even simple acts of kindness can mean so much to families in crisis. None of this would have been possible without the continued support of our donors, volunteers, and well-wishers who stand with Lotus Caring Hands in serving those in need.
